FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 2, 2007 — The IT Employee Confidence Index decreased by 1.4 points to 58 in the first quarter of 2007, according to the latest Spherion IT Employment Report, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation (NYSE: SFN). The Employee Confidence Index dropped due to less workers believing in the strength of the economy and job availability, despite increased confidence levels among IT workers in their personal employment situations. Results from the IT Employment Report:
34 percent of information technology workers are likely to look for a new job in the next 12 months, down 12 percentage points from the previous quarter. 24 percent of workers believe the economy is getting stronger, decreasing eight percentage points from the fourth quarter of 2006. Three-quarters (75%) of surveyed workers believe it is unlikely they will lose their job, increasing one percentage point from the fourth quarter of last year.
“The U.S. is experiencing a measurable shortage of domestic IT talent, causing technology companies to go as far as to lobby Congress to grant more H-1B visas to temporary foreign IT workers,” said Brendan Courtney, senior vice president of Spherion® Professional Services Group. “The confluence of a growing tech economy, the recent Web 2.0 renaissance and the steady decline in science and engineering graduates, has created an abundance of open IT jobs with nobody to fill them. That being said, more high tech employers are offering existing employees retention incentives to remain competitive, so it is not surprising to see IT workers feeling confident about their job security.”
