NEW YORK, N.Y., April 19, 2007 – The New York Employee Confidence Index gained 1.2 points in March, increasing to 55.6 according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey of New York workers, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation (NYSE:SFN), shows that as more workers report confidence in their ability to find a new job, fewer are optimistic about the strength of the economy and in the future of their employers.
Results from the New York Employment Report:
- Fifty-nine percent of workers are confident in their ability to find a new job, a 13-percentage-point increase from February.
- Fewer workers are confident in the future of their employer. Forty-seven percent of workers are confident in the future of their employer, a seven-percentage-point drop from the previous month.
-
Nearly half (47%) of the workers surveyed believe that the state’s job market is stabilized. Forty-seven percent of workers believe that there were the same amount of jobs available in March as in February, a 12-percentage-point increase.
“Our Report shows us that more workers are confident in their ability to find a new job, which helped the Confidence Index tick back up in March,” said Rich Mazelsky, regional vice president of Spherion Staffing Services. “We are still seeing job growth in a variety of key industries across the state, and workers who need or choose to find new jobs are feeling confident about their prospects. However, a high number of those who are already employed look to stay put for the time being, as more workers are not as confident in the strength of the economy.”

About the Spherion Employment Report
Methodology
The March 2007 Spherion® Employment Report is based on data from a Harris Interactive® QuickQuerySM online omnibusconducted on behalf of Spherion Corporation. A U.S. sample of 3,044 employed adults, aged 18 years and older, of whom 246 are employed in New York (for Feb 2007 n=260), was interviewed in a series of two polls conducted between March 5-7 and March 12-14, 2007. Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, income, education and region were weighted where it is necessary to bring them in line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting adjusted for respondents’ propensity to be online. With pure probability samples, with 100 percent response rates, it is possible to calculate the probability that the sampling error (but not other sources of error) is not greater than some number. With a pure probability sample of 3,044 U.S. employed adults one could say with a 95 percent probability that the overall results would have a sampling error of +/- two percentage points, and the sampling error for the New York state sample results would be +/- six percentage points. However, that does not take other sources of error into account. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
