FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., August 17, 2007 – After declining for two consecutive months, the Florida Employee Confidence Index increased 6.4 points to 59.8 in July, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey of Florida workers, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation, shows that a higher percentage of workers are optimistic about the economy, job market and the number of jobs available.
Results from the Florida Employment Report:
- Thirty percent of workers believe more jobs are available, compared to 17 percent in June.
- More workers believe the economy is getting stronger. Specifically, 26 percent of workers believe the economy is getting stronger, up four percentage points from June.
- Sixty percent of workers are confident in their ability to find a new job, rising 15 percentage points from the previous month.
- Over three-fourths (77%) of workers believe it is unlikely they will lose their job in the next 12 months compared to 69% in June.
“The employment landscape in Florida remains strong and this month’s report reflects this sentiment,” said Paula Franco, branch manager of Florida for Spherion Staffing Services. “The demand for qualified workers continues to grow, and salaries are inching up as well. We are seeing evidence of this as more workers are being lured away to other companies with increasing salaries and the opportunity to work on new technology projects. In terms of overall demand, candidates with experience in outside customer service, sales, accounting and those with specialized labor skills are in greatest demand. I predict that the need for individuals with both advanced and basic skills will only grow as we head into the second half of the year.”

About the Spherion Employment Report
As part of the Spherion® Emerging Workforce® Series of employment surveys, the monthly Spherion Employment Report provides a snapshot of the latest workforce trends across the country and is issued in conjunction with state and national labor market releases. Three key indices are measured: the Spherion Job Security Index, which captures how likely respondents think it is that they will lose their job or that their job will be eliminated in the next 12 months; the Spherion Job Transition Index, which captures how likely respondents are to look for a new job in the next 12 months; and the Employee Confidence Index, which measures employees’ overall confidence in the economy, the future of their employer, the availability of jobs, and their ability to find other employment. The Employee Confidence Index is based on these four components, with a ‘score’ calculated for each by taking the difference of the percentage of positive responses and the percentage of negative responses. These four scores are then averaged to indicate an overall level of employee confidence scaled from 0 (no confidence) to 100 (complete confidence). A reading above 50 indicates a positive confidence level.
