FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 22, 2009 – For the second consecutive month, the Florida Employee Confidence Index increased, rising 1.7 points to 40.7 in April, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey of Florida workers, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation, reveals that fewer workers believe the economy is getting weaker and more workers are confident in their ability to find a new job.
Results from the Florida Employment Report:
- The percentage of workers that believe the economy is getting weaker decreased by 17 percentage points to 55 percent in April.
- Nearly 40 percent (39 percent) of Florida workers are confident in their ability to find a new job, rising seven percentage points from the previous month.
- More workers are likely to look for a new job in the next year. Specifically, 41 percent indicated a likelihood to do so compared to 32 percent in March.
“Our latest survey results reveal a continued uptick in overall confidence,” said Paula Franco, branch manager for Spherion Staffing Services in Florida. “Although surprising, I would assume that because the pace of U.S. job loss seems to be somewhat slowing, construction spending slightly ticked up in March, and the Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index rose considerably in April, this may be contributing to the rise seen in our latest report. Despite this positive news, it is no doubt a tough situation out there for job seekers and employers alike. Clients are being very cautious with their staffing levels and candidates are looking for multiple jobs to fill in the gaps. We are advising both employers and job seekers to be more strategic with their actions, whether it’s working with us to find exactly the right talent or tailoring their resume to fit each open position they are applying for.”
