Ohio Employment Report: Confidence Index Decreases Slightly in June

COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 17, 2009 — The Ohio Employee Confidence Index decreased slightly by 1.8 points to 45.6 in June, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation (NYSE:SFN), reports renewed fears about the strength of the economy, and more employees are pessimistic about job availability.

Results from the Ohio Employment Report:

 

  • More workers (44 percent) believe the economy is getting weaker, an increase of 14 percentage points from May.
  • Eighty-two percent of workers believe fewer jobs are available, a nine-percentage-point increase from the previous month.
  • More workers (41 percent) are confident in their ability to find a new job, an increase of five percentage points from May.

“Although overall confidence dipped some in June, we are still seeing more workers express optimism in their ability to find a new job, despite an increase in those believing fewer jobs are available,” said Robert Schulte, Spherion franchise owner in Ohio. “While it is certainly encouraging to see an uptick in personal confidence, it is still necessary to note that the job market in Ohio remains a bit shaken by several consecutive months of state and national job loss.  We remain cautious on using this indicator as a forecasting tool, however it is nice to see signs starting to point in the right direction.”
