California Employee Confidence Report: Worker Confidence Declines in July

LOS ANGELES, Calif., August 21, 2009 –The California Employee Confidence Index slipped 4.2 points to 41.9 in July, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey of California workers, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation (NYSE:SFN), uncovers that more than half of California workers are likely to look for a new job in the next year, although only one-third are confident in their ability to find a new job.

Results from the California Employment Report:

  • Fewer workers reported that they are confident in their ability to find a new job. Specifically 33 percent versus 43 percent in June.
  • More than half (52 percent) of workers believe it is likely they will look for a new job in the next 12 months, an increase of 11 percentage points from the previous month.
  • Forty-eight percent of California workers are confident in the future of their current employer compared to 62 percent in June.

“After a brief period of increased confidence, our California Employee Confidence Index has now experienced its second consecutive month of decline,” explained Joan Van Donge, region vice president for Spherion. This is to be expected as the economy appears to be in somewhat of a holding pattern. However, we are seeing hiring opportunities at companies that have made deep cuts in their headcount and are now realizing they need outside project support in order to maintain their operational workload. We are seeing these opportunities in industries like accounting, banking, mortgage, commercial real estate and healthcare. It is also important to note that more than half of workers surveyed indicated that they are likely to look for new jobs. This is an indicator that will become increasingly vital to organizations as the economy works through this slowdown and workers become more personally confident.”
