DALLAS, Texas, August 21, 2009 – Despite employment rising in July, the Texas Employee Confidence Index dipped 2.2 points to 51.9, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey of Texas workers, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation, underscores the mixed emotions workers have toward our current macroeconomic situation.
Results from the Texas Employment Report:
- Forty-seven percent of workers believe the economy is getting weaker, showing an increase of nine percentage points from June.
- Seventy-six percent of Texas workers believe they are not likely to lose their jobs, up five percentage points from the previous month.
- Approximately one quarter (26 percent) of workers believe it is likely they will make a job transition in the next 12 months compared to 36 percent in June.
“Although we are on the heels of June’s report showing a record high in our Employee Confidence Index over the last year, we continue to see signs of wavering confidence among Texas workers. The slight decline in this month’s Index is reflective of the economic uncertainty being felt by workers not only in Texas, but across the country,” said Kim Lockhart, regional vice president for Spherion in Texas. “It appears, however, that Texas workers are expressing high levels of personal confidence. Employers should take note of this sentiment as conversations about their talent base and preparing for an eventual market turnaround take place.”
