New York Employment Report: Employee Confidence Index Marks New 2009 High

NEW YORK, N.Y., September 17, 2009 – The New York Employee Confidence Index reached a new high for 2009, increasing 8.9 points to 55.6 in August, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey of New York workers, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation, shows that the increase in the Employee Confidence Index was buoyed by more workers feeling confident in the strength of the economy, as well as in their ability to find a new job.

Results from the New York Employment Report:

  • Twenty-eight percent of workers surveyed believe the economy is getting stronger, an increase of 12 percentage points from July.
  •  More workers (52 percent) are confident in their ability to find a new job, a 12-percentage-point increase from the previous month.
  • Nearly three-quarters (74 percent) of workers are confident in the future of their current employer, an increase of seven percentage points from July.

“Aside from the slight dip last month, New York’s Employee Confidence Index has consistently increased throughout 2009, and it’s great to see it reach its present level in August,” said Linda Perneau, vice president and general manager of Spherion Staffing Services. “With the economy continuing to show signs of stabilization and fewer layoffs happening across the nation, it is not surprising to see that more workers are encouraged about the job situation. Although nearly three-quarters of workers surveyed reported that they are confident in the future of their current employer, more than half also reported confidence in their ability to find a new job. This is a statistic we highly recommend employers monitor as the recession begins to loosen its grip, providing workers with increased job options.”
